Stef Van Alsenoy is a sound designer, photographer and recording engineer.

His soundscapes are often acoustic extensions of visual arts or theatrical performances. He created soundscapes for among others exhibitions of photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, performances of the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra and Vlaams Radiokoor, and theatre maker Kris Verdonck – as well as for his own work as a photographer.
Minimalism, organic textures and the use of ‘found’ sounds are at the core of his sonic works. They aim to create an acoustic ‘presence’ as another dimension of the visual context – rather than being a standalone musical dimension parallel to the visual. Most of his soundscapes are created with surround sound which adds to this extra dimension.

Shape, texture and motion are essential in his photography, time lapses and long exposure images. Minimalism – complimentary to the use of silence in sound – is also an important dimension.
His series of photographs and time lapses about clouds emphasize shape, contours and textures during the formation, evolution and finally dissolution into nothingness.

Sound design and photography are two complimentary art forms for Stef Van Alsenoy. He created minimalist soundscapes as a dialogue with his own photography and timelapses – as in his ‘Mono No Aware’ exhibition at the Concertgebouw in Brugge, and the ‘Clouds around Mount Fuji’ exhibition at Tours and Taxis in Brussels.

Stef Van Alsenoy is also an experienced recording engineer, which also provides him with a solid technical background underlying his artistic creations and performances.
He has recorded and mixed more than 2.500 concerts as the resident recording engineer in the Ancienne Belgique concert hall in Brussels.
As a freelance studio recording engineer he has recorded and/or mixed albums by Axelle Red, Daan, Dead Man Ray, Gwen Cresens Quartet, …
As a mastering engineer he has done restauration and mastering work for Baudoin Oosterlinck, Michael Ranta, Arsène Souffriau, …
He also frequently works as a live sound mixer for bands and theatre performances.

Stef Van Alsenoy is sound designer, fotograaf en recording engineer.
Hij creëerde surround soundscapes voor oa. fotograaf Stephan Vanfleteren, Brussels Phiharmonic en het Vlaams Radiokoor, theatermaker Kris Verdonck - en ook voor zijn eigen werk als fotograaf.
Minimalisme en gebruik van ‘gevonden’ klanken zijn de kern van zijn soundscapes, waarbij de nadruk niet op een dwingende muzikale begeleiding ligt maar eerder op een akoestische presence als ondertoon van de tentoonstellingen en voorstellingen. Het gebruik van suround sound bij die soundscapes creëert daarbij nog een extra dimensie.

In zijn fotografie zijn vooral vorm en textuur van de beelden belangrijk, en er is ook veel plaats voor leegte – complementair aan het gebruik van stilte in klank. Zijn serie foto’s en timelapses van wolken benadrukken vooral vorm, contouren en texturen bij het ontstaan, de evolutie en het uiteindelijk weer oplossen in het niets van de wolken.

Sound design en fotografie zijn voor Stef Van Alsenoy twee complementaire kunstvormen. Voor zijn tentoonstelling ‘Mono No Aware’ in het Concertgebouw in Brugge en ‘Clouds around Mount Fuji’ in Tours & Taxis in Brussel maakte hij minimalistische soundscapes die een wisselwerking vormden met zijn wolkenfotografie en timelapses.

Stef Van Alsenoy is ook recording engineer – wat hem tegelijk ook de technische bagage geeft voor de ontwikkeling en uitvoering van zijn artistieke creaties.
Als resident engineer van de Ancienne Belgique in Brussel nam hij al ongeveer 2.500 concerten op.
Hij verzorgde opname en/of mix van platen van oa. Axelle Red, Daan, Dead Man Ray, Gwen Cresens Quartet, …
Als freelance livemixer heeft hij ruimte ervaring in de klankversterking van concerten en theatervoorstellingen.
